P7 pupils in Faughanvale PS's BUZZ Programme

FAUGHANVALE DRAMATISE DRUGS!
The showcase of work created by P7 pupils in Faughanvale Primary School,
Greysteel, took place on Wednesday 15th June ’05 at the school. Pupils
performed separate plays that they wrote themselves which were the results
of weeks of hard work as part of the Verbal Arts Centre’s ‘BUZZ
Programme’. The 3 plays were based on how drugs can
cause many problems on an individual as well as a societal basis.
Drama
BUZZ Programme Co-ordinator, Cynthia Browne, explained the particular project
in Faughanvale Primary School; “During the BUZZ Programme activities,
negative messages about drug taking are frequently reaffirmed and the young
people are encouraged to draw their own conclusions about the damage that drugs
can do. The young people in the Faughanvale Primary School class decided
to portray, through drama, the destruction that illegal drug-taking can cause
and the results were surprisingly mature, extremely well written, quite complex
in places and highly engaging. Elements of the plays illustrated healthy
attitudes towards illegal drugs in that they involved chronologically-written
downward spirals in the characters’ lives leading to tragic consequences. Basically,
after watching the resulting plays, I think we can safely say that these young
people have got the message!”
