There will be a dedicated Chaucer Workshop with textual
focus decided by the participating school.

Chaucer and Radio Soap Opera

This workshop will look at the historical context of Chaucer's work and how social, cultural, religious, literary and biographical factors impacted on this.
There will also be a brief history of the factors which led to the changes from Medieval to Modern English and a
quick guide to the pronunciation of Medieval English and the linguistic conventions of Chaucer's work.

They will look at factors within the text with relevance to modern mores and conventions - how the Medieval English differed from and were similar to us.

Students will then be asked, in groups, to update a passage from the selected text for a modern day
audience - changing the language, setting, etc. This can
be done in the form of a monologue, speech or piece of scripted radio drama.

An optional second session can be booked with our recording engineer, who will record the finished dramas
and instruct students in how to edit these and add sound effects
