| For all areas:
Age Range: 14 - 18
Duration: 1hr 30 mins
Group size: 30
Cost: £40 per group
1. Focus on Poet
Students will be given a short introduction to the poet and
look at the historical context in which they wrote. They will
discuss the themes which run throughout the poet's work with
reference to specific texts and look at the techniques which
the poet uses to explore those themes. Examples of poems which
do not use these techniques or use them badly will be provided
for
comparison. Students will then be expected to produce a poem
of their own which reflects their new understanding. Examples
of this include a reply to or expansion on a particular theme
or subject or a reworking of a particular poem using either
the
poem in its entirety or a single line.
2. Focus on Form
Students will look at a traditional form or forms of poetry
(sonnet, villanelle, etc). Both good and bad examples of
these will be provided for discussion. They will be taught
the conventions of the form and look at the impact these
have on the final texts. They will be asked to decide which
poems are good examples of the form and why. Students will
then be expected to produce an original example of a poem
in the form studied and the class will discuss which of these
are most successful.
3. Focus on Language and Imagery
Students will compare and contrast a selection of poetry (poems
to be decided by teacher and facilitator in advance) and will
be asked to decide which they like and dislike and why. This
session will concentrate on providing students with the vocabulary
and
terminology to critique poetry, explaining the function and
impact of techniques like enjambment, metaphor, etc. Students
will then be expected to produce an original example of a
poem which uses imagery to explore a theme or subject of their
own choosing.
