Joseph Doherty is going hungry for the poor people in Uganda.
The local businessman from Derry stays in the Verbal Arts Centre
all day refraining from eating food of any description for 10
days in order to draw the attention to the hunger disaster in
the African State.
Doherty’s fast for the starving people in Africa is accompanied
by an exhibition of African Art including artists such as Khadija
Shaw, a former Ugandan refugee who depicts her story through the
medium of watercolour paintings. Another artist is Alan Hageman,
an artist from Zimbabwe whose medium is acrylic on canvas and
finally a magnificent collection of stone sculptures from Zimbabwe.
The aim of the event is to raise awareness of poverty, Third
World debt, AIDS and the much needed funds for the African Greater
Life Mission charity based in Uganda. Any proceeds from the sale
of the art and the money from Doherty’s sponsorship will
also go to the charity.
Joseph, how do you feel after four days without eating
any food?
I am feeling surprisingly strong and invigorated. My stomach
has ceased yearning for food and my mind seems particularly focused.
Where does the idea for the event come from?
I wanted to do something that was different from all other
fundraising events. Something that would draw attention to the
great cause (third world poverty) and push my own boundaries.
There are many poor countries in Africa. Why did you
choose Uganda?
I chose Uganda because it has come out of a troubled time
to have a good democratic government and has developed progressive
poverty eradication programmes. I think it could be the benchmark
for other African countries.
How much money have you collected for the charity to
date?
People have been extremely generous. I mean, you always get
those with blinkers on who choose not to see you but most of the
people have been movingly generous. I have raised £3,900
so far and I hope to reach £5,000 by December.
The event is taking place from 5th to 17th of December at the
Verbal Arts Centre. To support the event, donations can be sent
to Wafer Ltd., Beraghmore Rd, Derry. BT48 8SE. Cheques are gratefully
received, payable to Africa Greater Life Mission. For more information
