Patrick Ryan

A report by Patrick Ryan, Storyteller in Residence April-November 1997, on one aspect of Developing Schools Project. Supporting Language Development through Storytelling: a joint venture between the Western Education and Library Board Advisory Service and the Verbal Arts Centre. The residency’s purpose was to use a storyteller to raise students’ self-esteem and confidence, and to motivate them in their studies, through oracy. It was also the intent to model new or different practices that teachers might adapt, and so refresh their own skills. It was hoped these new skills would find continued practice after the scheme ended. The final objective was to get the support of administrators, governors and parents so the Senior Management Team (SMTs) would carry on successful activities after central funding finished.
